Motorola Edge 30 Ultra – first impressions
It has an aluminum protective structure, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. The front camera is brought into a centrally positioned dot cutout and impresses with its high megapixel count. The rear camera protrudes quite strongly, even with the protective case from the package installed, and accidental scratches can accumulate on the 200 Megapixel sensor with OIS.
The Edge30 series uses a pOLED screen, a technology we discussed a few years ago and was part of LG's panoply. I need to investigate where they got this display, most likely from BOE. I compared it with the Vivo X80 Pro, which has an LTPO3 AMOLED panel. The colors on the Motorola are a bit more washed out, they remind me more of an..., IPS and not an AMOLED. They increased the refresh rate to 144Hz. I understand that the pOLED display on the Edge 30 Ultra goes up to 1250 nits at peak. All in all, the screen can't be said to be its strong point.
They didn't compromise on the chipset, the best processor in Qualcomm's current offering – Snapdragon 8+ Gen1. The first generation of this processor was a small fail, in the sense that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 is up to..., 30% more efficient (without major changes in the lithography process, etc.). The model we tested in the last few days was accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
Another original element brought by Motorola is the Ready For technology on USB Type-C 3.1 that allows connecting by wire or wireless to a monitor and displaying an interface that you can control via mouse and keyboard. It's a sort of Samsung DeX from Motorola. I will test it and come back with more impressions.
The Edge 30 Ultra uses a 200 Megapixel sensor with OIS and f/1.9, for portrait mode and 2x zoom they brought a 12 Megapixel sensor, and the ultrawide comes out in front with 50 Megapixels. I have taken a series of pictures since taking it out of the box.
It's a bit worse with the focus on nearby objects, especially if you want to use the main camera and the object you want to photograph is 15-20-25 cm away, it simply refuses to focus. It is solved if you switch to macro mode. At night I can't say it's bad, but it's not impressive either. At least it brings you images without chromatic aberrations, the Night mode is better than what you find elsewhere (some phones in total darkness stubbornly remove the ambient environment, etc.).
During the day, as happens with most smartphones, there are no problems (regardless of whether we are talking about a mid-range or a top of the range).
Initial conclusions
Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is an interesting proposition in the segment of top smartphones. There was a time when the American brand was not present here, but it seems clear to me that you have to have one device on the whole spectrum. Motorola has sought-after devices in North and South America, they do well in other markets, including Europe, and the Edge 30 Ultra has technologies that put it ahead.
